アメリカ人女性初のノーベル文学賞受賞者で、とりわけ30以上の言語に翻訳された小説『大地』の作者として知られるパール?バック（1892-1973）は、核兵器の廃絶に尽力するとともに、混血孤児施設を設立、里親探しに奔走するとともに、あらゆる差別に抗議した人権?平和活動家、社会運動家としても名高い。そのバックが、実は中国のみならず、日本と深い関係にあったこと、また、ジェノサイド条約生みの親である、ユダヤ系ポーランド人法学者、ラファエル?レムキン（1900-1959）のよき理解者であり、絶大な協力者であったことは知られていない。

1940年代初頭、日本を経由して横浜港からアメリカに渡ったレムキンは、アメリカ社会で無名に近い存在であった。その「たった一人の十字軍」とも称される、ジェノサイド条約採択に至る困難な過程を支えたのがバックである。

本シンポジウムでは、「パール?バック、ラファエル?レムキン、ジェノサイド条約への苦闘の道」の著者であるアメリカ人研究者クロウェ氏を中心に、パール?バックと日本の関係を世に出した本学出身の研究者を招き、パール?バックを通じて、ジェノサイド条約の成立過程を議論する。

Pearl Buck (1892-1973), the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature is best known as the author of the novel The Good Earth, translated into over 30 languages. She was also renowned as a human rights and peace activist who worked tirelessly for the abolition of nuclear weapons, a social activist who established a home for orphans of mixed and worked to find them foster parents, and a protester against all forms of discrimination. However, it is less known that Buck had deep connections not only with China but also with Japan, and that she was a strong supporter and invaluable collaborator of Raphael Lemkin (1900-1959), the Jewish-Polish lawyer who conceived the Genocide Convention. In the early 1940s, Lemkin fled to America via Japan, departing from Yokohama Port. He was virtually unknown in American society. It was Buck who supported him throughout the arduous process that led to the adoption of the Genocide Convention, a struggle often described as Lemkin’s “one-man crusade.”

This symposium, centered on American scholar Dr. Crowe, author of “Pearl S. Buck, Raphael Lemkin, and the Struggle for the Genocide Convention,” invites a researcher from Rikkyo University who have brought Pearl Buck's connection to Japan to light. Together, we will discuss the process of establishing the Genocide Convention through the lens of Pearl Buck.
